Stakeholders from Sokoto, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger and Zamfara States are having engagement to deliberate on strategic catchment management plan for Sokoto – Zamfara, Rima and Golbin – ka.
Niger ACReSAL participants are led by three(3) Parmenent Secretaries from State Ministries of Environment, Agriculture, Water Resources and State project Coordinator Mal Raji Shehu Adam.
Other participants are project Natural Resources, GIS/MIS, Communication Officer, Engineer, state ministry Directors, Academics and representatives of traditional institutions.
The event is taking place between 9th to 16th of Feb. 2025 at the Army Officers Mess and Suites, Sokoto.
The Agro – climatic Resilience in Semi – Arid Landscape (ACReSAL) Project Stakeholders engagement on the strategic catchment management plan in Sokoto has done with the activities in day 3.
The activities which has to do with Golbin – ka Catchment which covers kebbi, Sokoto, Niger and Zamfara States is over 90% agrarian, making sustainable water management crucial for the livelihood of the people in the region.
The event starts with detailed presentation of the catchment (Golbin – ka) by Dr Chuka. And continue with contributions from the stakeholders especially from the affected States.
The session which was very interactive has full representation of Niger ACReSAL stakeholders led by the three permanent secretaries and the State Project Coordinator.Niger state participants in the event contributed immensely in the discussion, highlighting the areas of Natural resources, problems and state policies which will contribute towards the development of the successful catchment management plan.

The fourth day activities is groups discussion between States that are in the same catchment area, which Niger State happened to be in Golbin – ka catchment area.
The groups are shouldered with responsibilities of coming up with: Sustainable management and utilization of resources in catchment area, equitable Desilting of river chanels and reservoir within the catchment area. And to streamline / harmonies policies in States within the catchment among other things.

The Golbi-ka catchment presentation was done by the group chairperson Prof. Mairo. The participant at the just concluded stakeholders engagement for the development of catchment management plan for Sokoto-Zamfara, Rima and Golbin-ka, organised by the ACReSAL Project, have been urged to go and consolidate the plan immediately in order to have meaning and value to the concluded activities, The representative of the ACReSAL Project Task Team Leader (TTL) Dr Joy Iganya Agene, Mr Andrew Segla made the called at the closing ceremony of the event. Mr Andrew, maintain that this catchment management plan is not only for ACReSAL, but also for other donor agencies, that will be coming, that is why it is called plan. He therefore called on the participant to have a link of contacting each other and send what ever they feel is missing in the document to the Consultant when they go back through their Email. He then urged the Consultant to come up with policy strategic management plan to ensure all inclusive plan.
Representing the ACReSAL National Project Coordinator Abdulhamid Umar, the National Ecological Specialist. Mrs Henrietta Alhassan thanks all the stakeholders especially the Permanent Secretaries and Royal Fathers that have been with the program throughout. And prayed that, this effort will lead to the successful outcome at the end of it, and wish each and everyone journey mercy back their various destination.
Earlier, the representative of the traditional institutions Alhaji Mohammed Sunusi Mohammed the Sarkin Bauchi of Rijau from Niger State and Golbin-ka catchment area,
appreciate the effort of the federal government and the world Bank through ACReSAL project in organizing this important engagement for the betterment of the environmental and livelihood of this catchment areas. And pledge their total support to the successful implementation of the program.
